Shop Opening!

Hi everyone! How was your holiday season with family and friends? My family and I went to Malaysia for a week's vacation. We met our friends visiting from North Carolina in Kuala Lumpur and drove up to Penang where we spent a few days with them and our cousins who were excellent tour guides.

We had dinner with hubby's two cousins and their families, who live in Penang.

Thank you to all who supported me during the past year. I really enjoyed designing jewelry pieces for you. Thank you too to those of you who have ordered more jewelry for the new year. I will start work on them next week.

For those of you who have been waiting SO patiently for my new shop to open, I've good news! I'll be opening shop starting 9th January 2012! Do remember you can visit BY APPOINTMENT only (at least a day's notice in advance). This helps me in my planning and scheduling.

Shop hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday - 10am to 9pm

Saturday - 10am to 3pm (definitely must call ahead because I have choir rehearsals on some Saturdays)

Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - closed

My almost ready shop!

I'm really excited that my new shop is starting to look great and I can't wait to move in this week! All that's left are the lightings for my display and work table, as well as the display board for hanging my jewelry pieces and my table's tackboard. I'm looking forward to taking out my pieces, writing descriptions for each piece so that you know exactly what materials I used and what kind of work went into each special design. Although my shop will be ready soon, I still have my kitchen renovations to contend with. That will take us to the end of November. I'm hoping to re-open in early December.

While we wait for my shop to open, here are some photos of the process...

This used to be my daughter's room. We moved her to a bigger room. Thankful for a very supportive husband who actually wanted me to use the smaller living room space but I decided to keep everything confined to this room.

On the 4th day of the renovations the carpenters put up the cupboards. It was really exciting to see my dream slowly becoming a reality. I've waited two years!

New Shop

My shop officially closed for renovations about 2 weeks ago. I've been sorting and packing up stuff, meeting the designer and contractor, deciding on the shop design and display system, colours etc. It has been really exciting for me. I'm thankful to my hubby for letting me use one room to work in and display what I love to do!

I'll also be having a new kitchen put in so I'll be able to expand my cupcake baking business.

The contractors are coming in this week and I expect my shop to be done in about 3 weeks' time. I hope to re-open first week of December in time for Christmas. So please make your list (and you've time to check it twice!) and make a date with me come early December. Watch out for more news.

New Ear-rings!

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been rather quiet on my blog. Truth is I've been really busy working on custom orders (will post photos soon) and some new items. I'm now also working on developing my new website, taking photos of my one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and writing descriptions for them.

Exciting news! I'll be renovating my studio and showroom in the next couple of months and hope to bring you better displays and choices. A re-opening is targetted for late November so check back regularly for updates!

Today, I managed to photograph some of my new ear-rings, mostly with gemstones or special beads. Please click on the Ear-Rings page at the top of my blog to see them!

Christmas will soon be upon us, so it's not too early to start making your list (and checking it twice of course). I will be off work beginning December through January, so do get in your custom orders as soon as possible. I will work on orders as they come in. Orders take 2-6 weeks to fill!

Back from my break

My hubby, daughter and I spent 7 days in China. We visited Hangzhou, Shanghai and Yiwu. The main aim of the trip was to explore places where I could buy good quality products for my jewelry business. My best buy was in Yiwu, at the International Trade City, where I managed to get really nice boxes to pack my jewelry in. I have been having a bit of a problem packing my larger neck pieces. Of course this meant I had to order in bulk, which I did, and they took only 4 days to arrive after we got back to Singapore! Thanks to our friend's contact we were able to get things sorted out quite quickly.

In Yiwu, my friend's old college classmate (who is now a government official) extended hospitality to us by inviting us to dinner. As a final dish, we were served with an ox head, complete with horns and teeth! The meat was tender and tasty.

At the International Trade City District One in Yiwu, we managed to find a wholesale freshwater pearl supplier. I found nice pearls with good prices and bought some supplies to bring home. As it is with trade markets, everything has to be bought in bulk so I spent two days choosing my pearls!

Hangzhou is famous for its silk and tea. We managed to visit the National Silk Museum and also went for their Long Jie Green Tea tasting. The food was also quite good and below is a photo of 3-layer pork braised in soy sauce and served with braised bamboo shoots. The presentation was really nice as you can see.

Well, for the next few weeks I will be getting my new inventory done, photographs taken, writing descriptions and then waiting for my new website to be ready. I will also be back to designing my larger and more artistic pieces.

I will still be taking custom orders but the waiting time will now be 6-8 weeks for regular items so do plan ahead if you want to order something special for yourself or your loved ones. Neck pieces and cuffs will take longer. As usual if you see anything you like on the blog and would like to buy it, do let me know.

Taking a break

Just to assure all of you that I'm still around and working hard even though I've not been blogging! The reason is that I've been working on setting up my new website which will hopefully be up by July. This means you will get to see more jewelry pieces and follow my designing journey. Time has also been spent taking photos and updating my inventory.

In June, I'll be travelling overseas to buy gemstones as well as looking for unique and unusual beads for my new pieces. I'll be back on the 14th and will post photos of my travels.

New Piece

These past two weeks have been a little hectic, preparing for a friend's wedding and completing some custom orders. However, I managed to start and complete a "bigger" neckpiece. She will be one of my show pieces later in the year. I've still yet to name her but I can't wait to show her off to you! She is definitely an OOAK (one-of-a-kind) piece. It took me about 60 hours to complete her.

This is a gorgeous choker style neckpiece that will go very well with a simple dress. The oval cabachons are chrysanthemum stones, light mahagony in colour with flowered inclusions. The rest of the stones are fancy jasper in greens,browns and pinks. The piece is covered painstakingly with thousands of Japanese glass seed beads in two sizes and held together by Swarovski crystal pearls.

The brass coloured S-hook clasps (yes, there are two!) flank the sides of an embroidered oval chrysanthemum stone cabachon with a fringe to give it a

perfect finish.

Now I'm off to work on another neckpiece, perhaps even bigger!

Bridal Collection

I've been working really hard on my bridal collection and here's my first lot to show you. Most of the necklaces in this collection are choker or collar lengths, meaning they hug the neck quite snugly. They range from 13.5 inches to 14.5 inches. Some of them can be extended.

This has to be one of my favourites. Beautiful Swarovski light creamrose pearls and crystals fill this necklace. Chains and clasp are gold-filled. Really fit for a princess!

Endless Necklaces and New Items

Happy Lunar New Year to my Chinese friends! After a busy start of the year getting my house in order (still 40% to go!), I finally managed to sit down and design a few new items. I started with endless necklaces because the ones I made last year have all been sold out. Endless necklaces are long with no clasps and really versatile in that you can wear them in a few different ways.

You can wear them double round your neck and adjust how long or short you want the loops.

You can tie a knot anywhere along the front and have a Charleston looking necklace.

You can loop the necklace like a scarf.

And of course you can wear your necklace just plain and dangly or layer them by wearing a few at a time.

Spring Cleaning

Our Ragdoll, Sniffles, wishing all my friends a wonderful Christmas season and New Year ahead!

Last year ended with a great need to have more storage space in my home office and jewelry studio. After our vacation in Australia, my husband and I decided to shop for furniture. Since my home office bookshelves are all teakwood, we decided to look for store we got our shelves from but alas, they no longer exist. A visit to various teak furniture shops drew a blank as they were either too rustic, exotic or workmanship poor (including well known stores).

We finally found a place that sold what we are happy with. The past two weeks have been spent clearing out stuff, cleaning and packing up. It has taken most of my waking hours and I'm still nowhere near the end. The new furniture will be coming tomorrow and hopefully I can pack things up by the end of the week.

This project has been more major than I imagined. After Chinese New Year we plan to change all our ceiling fans so another mess will be in store... Anyways, I've been thinking, planning and designing (on paper) the new jewelry I want to make this year and am looking forward to next week when I can (hopefully) begin my work once again. I know many of you are hoping to visit my studio. Thank you for being SO patient!

Today I'm posting a couple of photos of the socks I knitted a while back. I've been knitting all kinds of socks for the past few years. They make great gifts to friends overseas.

Wanted to show you our other Ragdoll, Lion-O, who loves to sit with Ethan when I'm not available. Here you can see Lion-O taking over the chair! In fact, I sometimes wonder if he thinks he's a dog!

Lion-O loves to sleep with support. He usually stays close by me when I'm working and he knows not to disturb me. Our friend Felix will be happy to see grandma and grandson thriving in our household. Thanks for the cats, Felix! We absolutely love them to bits!!

Happy 2011 Everyone!

Hi Everyone! I trust you had a great holiday season with your family and loved ones. We had an amazing time as a family in Gold Coast and Brisbane. This was our longest family vacation of 14 days! Although it rained 9 days out of our 14 days there (and it's supposed to be the Sunshine State!), we still enjoyed the cool air of 18-23 deg C and the 24/7 company of each other. I must confess after the first week, the adults started getting restless and we looked forward to our free MacDonald's WIFI time each evening to check our mail, read updates on facebook and work... The children, of course, enjoyed watching TV in the evenings (did I mention stores closed around 6pm??) and walking around the supermarkets (they close at 9pm). Certainly we mustn't forget the theme parks. I went on some of the rides with the children (anyone knows of a good psychologist to treat my "post traumatic stress disorder"?? The one I usually go to is suffering from the same disorder at this moment!) and I guess it meant a lot to them that their parents joined them in the fun.

Thank you for your support in my small business the past year. It has been really fun designing for you. Thank you too for the new orders coming in. This week I received 10 custom orders! Before I start work, I need to paint and re-do our home office and library. Hopefully I will be able to start work next week but you can still call for custom orders and the shop is open.

Early one morning in Brisbane, Keng Mun and I took a walk in the Botanical Gardens. This tree caught my eye because of it's unique shape.

At Whitewater World, this bird was so thirsty, he braved the dangerous toes of Ethan to have a drink! He was at it for a good 10 minutes, even pecking at Ethan's leg to drink the drops of water there.

Ethan was quite good at throwing the boomerang. In fact, he was the only one who could get it to return! Must be his Ultimate Frisbee training paying off.

This owl is the same species as the one in the Harry Potter movies. Really beautiful. We got front seats at the Birds of Prey show and enjoyed looking at the wonderful creations of God!

Our final destination, Paradise Resort Gold Coast. This was a hotel style accommodation and we all decided we much preferred service apartments because of the cooking facilities.

Vacation time...

Well, it's that time of year again when our family spends a couple of weeks' vacation together to prepare for the new year ahead. This year has been challenging with many detours at work and home, and it's also been a time of learning, growing and appreciating those who mean a lot to us.

I've a few more orders to fulfill and then plan for next year. I'm working on a few new designs. Do check back in January for another collection of jewelry.

Preparing for Christmas...

I've been busy with filling custom orders, baking and taking care of the family but rest assured, I've been working. So far I've completed about 20 necklaces and maybe 6 bracelets with many more ear-rings but just haven't had the time to photograph everything to show you. I'll try to do so in the next few weeks before Christmas.

Meanwhile, here are two pieces I completed a few weeks ago.

This is a 17-inch necklace using the St Petersburg technique for the necklace part and beadwork for the pendant part. The pendant is made up of Swarovski crystals and pearls. Really nice for a bride or for an elegant night out.

This bracelet fits up to 8-inch wrist. The techniques employed are peyote stitch and netting. Notice the centre part of the bracelet has a pleated design. It's deliberate and adds depth to the piece.

The same bracelet flattened out. The clasp is magnetic slip on.

Bracelet Galore!

Here are some the bracelets and cuffs I've completed so far. As you can see, I've a long way to go to produce 30 for next year's collection! I'll post their names and full descriptions in October or November, so in the meantime, just have a look and enjoy!

Adeline "noble"

I've been FIB (flat in bed) a lot this week due to a bad cough and cold. But in between I tried to do some work here and there. Today I'm feeling SO much better and managed to complete a bracelet cuff I started late last night. Hurray!

Adeline was made using silver lined bugle glass beads and gold Japanese glass seed beads to form a base. I covered a 1-inch aluminium bracelet cuff with ultrasuede and sewed the bugle bead base on after which I sewed a picot edge on the sides of bracelet. I then sewed on Swarovski pearls in various sizes and colours (creamrose and peach), Swarovski crystals and rounds using 11.0 and 15.0 Japanese glass seed beads through the middle of the base.

The result is a really elegant, refined looking bracelet cuff fit for a princess! I decided to make it with silver and gold so anyone can wear this. And since it's a 6-inch cuff, it fits all sizes. I love this so much I'm making another one in bronze!

Jocelyn "playful"

Something about me that many of you may not be aware is that I work very well when there are plenty of dark clouds, rain and a cool breeze blowing. Yes, I know I'm a bit strange (my psychologist friends tell me that too!). In fact, my most productive days are when the sun doesn't shine so much and everything gray and dreary. Since it's been raining a little the last couple of days Jocelyn was completed within one and a half days.

I wanted something simple, colourful and playful.

I glued on a white piece of silky damask onto the stiffening fabric. Here's Jocelyn half completed. Each Japanese glass seed bead is painstakingly sewn onto the cloth (I usually use about 3-4 needles for one bracelet because the stiffening can be really stiff and the thin needles keep bending!).

This is what the sunrise looked like this morning! At 6.45am it was simply beautiful. I think today will be a good day for another bracelet... I wonder what colour I will pick...?

OOAK (One-of-a-kind) Bracelets

This will be my last post for this week since I'll be leaving for Malaysia tomorrow morning and back on Sunday night. I'm completing these bracelets at a much faster pace than I had anticipated. Lady Inspiration has been a good visitor!

ZIARA "sunrise"

This was the centrepiece I made a few months back while waiting for my aluminium bracelet cuffs from the US to be delivered. I used lots and lots of Swarovki crystals to make this sunflower.

Next I sewed a base strip of size 11.0 Japanese glass seed beads to the length of the aluminium cuff. I used the Ndebele technique.

I covered the aluminium cuff with ultrasuede like so.

Viola! Here's the completed cuff. Isn't Zaira lovely?

JULIA "youthful"

The second cuff doesn't use an aluminium base. I used a pastel pink sunstone (it shimmers in the light so really pretty for day or evening wear) with agate flowers, freshwater pearls and hundreds of Japanese glass seed beads. I'm really happy with the design. Notice how the purple beads bring out the freshness or the pink beads. I sewed the all the beads onto a stiff fabric and then glued the ultrasuede on.

Here's the completed cuff all nicely edged with tiny Japanese glass seed beads and a German-made antique gold clasp.

Lovely and youthful looking, eh?

BIANCA "white"

This was my first bracelet cuff in the series of my new project. You can read about it on my May 1st post.

Sunrise...

I'm really privileged to be living in an apartment that overlooks a field, a stadium and a swimming pool. Each morning after getting the children off to school by 6.45am, I sit at my work table and think about my faith, my life and my day's work. This is what I see most mornings.

6.45am: Taken from my studio table. Don't you think I've a wonderful view?

7.00am: The photo doesn't show the splendid colours. It's always better in real life unless taken by a National Geographic photographer!

7.15am: Sad to say, having this marvellous view also means the sun comes through my window which sometimes makes it hard to work in such brightness so I've to draw the blinds...

Oh, I was able to work on my first bracelet cuff yesterday. I decided on a pale pink sunstone with lots of freshwater pearls. I've almost completed the main body and hopefully today I can finish it, glue it on the aluminium cuff and ultrasuede, and then complete the whole bracelet with a lovely edge.

My next piece will be a sunflower bracelet. I've already made the sunflower so we'll see what happens next. This weekend, I'll be going to Petaling Jaya in Malaysia to attend a workshop on Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) with my hubby. We also have his secondary school reunion gala dinner on Saturday night. So if you don't hear from me the rest of the week, see you next week!

Bracelet cuffs

My long-awaited package from the US arrived last week but I've been too busy to organize my supplies. Today I managed to take out my aluminium bracelet cuffs and put some designs to paper. I've been in a pearl mood lately so chances are my first few bracelets will be filled with pearls!

There are 60 bracelet cuffs and 2 arm cuffs to be made! They range from 1 inch to 3 inches in height.

This morning, while waiting for Lady Inspiration to visit to hand me ideas for my bracelets, I strung 4 strands of pearls (different shapes, sizes and colours) together and braided them to make this beautifully elegant necklace. I added Swarovski crystals to catch the light. Perfect for day or evening wear. 17 inches in length with a gold clasp.

Russian Leaf Ear-rings

Last week while waiting for my package of supplies to arrive from the US, I experimented with some small designs and made a nice pair of ear-rings for myself. I wore them to the counselling conference I attended last Monday through Wednesday. A friend who was there saw the ear-rings and liked them. This week she ordered 3 pairs! Here is what I wore:

This is a typical Russian design made with delica beads and Swarovski crystals. Instead of the crystals I can also bead veins in the middle of the leaf.

Do check out the Ear-rings section of the blog to see the other colour combinations I made including the ones my friend ordered. I hope she likes them!

Meanwhile, I'll be quiet for about a week because I'll be working feverishly on my single custom orders, a large project of 30 bead embroidery necklaces and 35 bracelets/cuffs (was due in July but now need another 5 months because the first package of supplies got lost in the mail!) as well as attending a counselling certification course in Petaling Jaya during the weekend.

Pearls Galore!

About three months ago, I ordered a big box of supplies from the USA but till today I have yet to see it. Two weeks ago I ordered another big box of supplies (this time registered and insured) and am praying it will arrive soon. I was working on a large project that was due in July but it's been stalled since the disappearance of Box 1. So while waiting for Box 2 to arrive I've got to keep moving...

This past week I've been working on pearls, pearls, pearls! Multistrand freshwater pearl necklaces to be exact.

Here's one of the necklaces I made. I find that 5-strands of freshwater pearls in differents sizes and shapes work pretty well, giving the full look without being too heavy (or expensive!). This necklace has a cream and peach tone (other tones include green, pink, copper, lilac and peach). I added Swarovski crystals which catches the light at certain angles making it suitable for day and evening wear. I've made my necklaces from 16 inches to 23 inches to suit different people's needs.

One of my customers brought in her 3-strand freshwater pearl necklace to be re-strung because it was too long for her. I shortened it to the length of her desire and added seashells and coral beads for her which resulted in some extra freshwater pearls so I made the necklace below for her with coral and garnet beads.

This custom order is a Swarovski pearl lariat necklace with apply green round crystals. The length of the necklace can be adjusted with this 925 silver magnet clasp with Swarovski crystals.

Right now I'm now working on Russian leaf ear-rings in assorted colours. I'll post photos as soon as I'm done. See you next week!

A New Week!

The past two weeks have been crazy in terms of schedules so it was with great anticipation and pleasure that I sat down at my studio table and started to WORK! I have so many back orders piling up, I'm getting a bit anxious but with today's longer working hours I hope to complete at least 3 orders.

Last week, one of my customers asked me to change a clasp for her because it had "turned bad." She had her pearl necklace re-strung by another jeweler a while back which cost her quite a bit. I looked at it, smiled and without uttering a word I proceeded to show her my miracle!

Here's what she brought in.

My little miracle after a 15-second polish! Yes, I'm afraid it's just a simple oxidation process that occurs when 925 silver is left outside. That's why it's important to keep your silver jewelry in zip lock bags after making sure they are clean and free from moisture (aka perspiration). My customer has ordered a "miracle" cloth to polish her jewelry. If you need one, drop me a line!

Beadwork Making Class #1

Beadwork is the art of threading tiny beads together incorporating crystals, pearls and other gemstones or beads using beading thread and needle. I'll be teaching a beginners' beadwork class on Sunday July 25th 1.30pm-4.30pm. I've already got 4 participants and can take two more! We will start with ear-rings. Teaching fees will be S$10 per hour, minimum 2 hours. All the materials you need will be provided in the kit. Here's what we'll be making:

Flower ear-rings in any colour your choose! Swarovski pearls and Japanese glass seed beads. You can add beads to make it longer if you like. Kit will cost S$12 with rhodium ear hooks and S$14 with gold-filled ear hooks.

Hematite squares (only dark gray) in any bead colours you choose! Swarovski crystals and Japanese glass seed beads. Kit will cost $12 for rhodium ear hooks and S$14 for gold-filled.

Another pair of flower ear-rings. Any colour you choose! Swarovski pearls, Swarovski crystals and Japanese glass seed beads.You can add beads to make it longer. Kit will cost S$15 for rhodium ear-hooks and S$17 for gold-filled.

This is more complicated if you are up for a challenge! Swarovski crystals, Swarovski pearl (inside the crystals) and Japanese glass seed beads. You can add beads to lengthen it. Also available in any colour you choose. Kit will cost S$25 for rhodium ear hooks and S$27 for gold-filled.

For the beadwork classes, you need to be able to use a thread and needle confidently. This can be really addictive so be prepared... you may want to make more than one pair of ear-rings! I know, because I made 30 at one go!!

It's been really hectic the past two weeks trying to catch up with the family (the children are having school holidays till tomorrow), help the hubby with some of his work, getting in our family's healthcare appointments, exercise classes and some baking orders. Quite challenging to work in my jewelry studio and having to keep up with the rest of the schedules! I've also moved my 18 feet of tables to another corner of the living room (where I now take up one quarter!) and get all my equipment and beads together in one place. My hubby's side of the room (the other quarter...) is still in a mess but that is one problem he has to clear himself.

Anyways, I'm here now and managed to take some photos for you.

This is the biggest bead embroidery neckpiece I've done by far. I'm naming her "Jesus Loves the Little Children." Made with turquoise, howlite and coral beads. Will really make a statement and start a conversation going!

Another view of "Jesus Loves the Little Children." Some folks are asking how much I sell these neckpieces. Well, it's OOAK (one-of-a-kind), specially thought through and designed, walking for days through supply shops to look for the "perfect" beads, then painstakingly made sewing on one bead at a time. Some of these neckpieces take up to 100 hours to make. My neckpieces so far are selling between S$180-600 depending on the size, materials used and time taken to make them. I don't do repeats at all so you can be assured you'll be the only one wearing it.

This is a new lariat design I made which can be worn in three different ways. This is the first way, with the loops coming out from under the geometric centrepiece.

The second way is to wear it with the loops going down into the geometric piece.

And finally, it can be worn like a scarf.

This is the same lariat made in black and red. Of course this can be made in any colour you desire and with any gemstones or beads for the coralling part. Custom orders for this lariat are welcome.

If you'd like to order your jewelry in time for Christmas, I suggest you start planning ahead! I'm working on quite a few projects now and will probably close order taking after September.

Gardening, Family and Friends

The past two weeks have been exciting and busy for me. I had to complete 2 custom orders for necklaces, help my husband out at a conference he was organizing and also spend time with my daughter who was on school break for a short two weeks. After 2 all-nighters trying to get things together for the conference, I am still trying to get back my lost sleep. Things are getting better now though with the house cleaned, baking orders delivered, two custom order necklaces completed and Alethea going back to school tomorrow.

Once I clean out my desk, I'll be able to get back to my studio and complete the 11 show necklaces and 29 bracelets by end of July! I promise I'll post photos of my necklaces by Friday. Meanwhile, enjoy a couple of photos below...

Here's a lovely looking pineapple outside my new neighbour's apartment, grown in a pot!

Alethea and I went shopping at Orchard Road a couple of weeks back. The place was packed even though it was about eleven in the morning! Where did all the people come from?

I've been baking the past few days to fulfill some orders. Yesterday, our cat, Lion-O, waited patiently for me to pay attention to him. He sat under the dining table for more than 4 hours...

A Kitten's Visit

Last night after our family dinner, we found a kitten outside our door sitting on the bench as if waiting for us to come home. He was hungry and asked for food (we understand cat language because we have two Ragdolls of our own!). As he tried to jump off the bench, we noticed he seemed to be injured. We found an infected toe on his right foot. Anyways, he's really beautiful and we took a few photos on my iPhone. Thought I'd share them with you today!

Ethan gave him lots of cat food. He ate every single morsel and asked for seconds!

After the feeding session, Alethea gave the Kitten some water and sat with him for a while. He stayed about an hour or so before moving on. Hope we'll see him today.

School Holidays

It has been a real treat for me to spend some time with Alethea the past week, going shopping and doing "girl" things with her. With a school schedule of 8am to 8pm (that doesn't include travel time) it has been challenging to find time to chill and talk. I only have her for two weeks before she's back to School of the Arts for her dance camp the last two weeks of the school vacation.

A couple of months ago, we had a new neighbour who moved in to the ground floor apartment at the bottom of our block. It seems they are real gardeners and before long the front of their apartment was filled with plants, fishes, and birds! For the plants, I've seen melons, beans, pineapples, cherry tomatoes, ladies' fingers, sunflowers, AND corn! What makes it more amazing is that all the plants are in pots!! I managed to take a few pictures:

The ladies' fingers grew to almost 10 inches! Quite pretty with the yellow flowers.

I'm inspired to plant my own vegetables but unfortunately I live on the 3rd floor with partial morning sun.

Anyways, I'm still working hard on my bead embroidery neckpieces. Will take photos in the next few days. I wore ALAMEA to a dinner party at the weekend and garnered very good feedback from many friends. Thanks for your support! Till I post again, have a great week ahead, everyone!

ALAMEA

This post is to let you know I've not gone missing! It's been a really hectic two weeks but I'm glad to say, things are moving along nicely now. I've been working on ALAMEA (which means "precious stone") and took ever so long because I had to keep running errands for the family. It's finally completed and I'm really pleased with her!

ALAMEA was a bit challenging to make because I had to embroider each Jasper gemstone and seashell coin individually. That took almost 7 days! Then I spent two days to sew the embroidered stones together. I really like ALAMEA because she's comfortable to wear and looks stunning. The Jasper gemstones are all different so that makes it especially interesting.

Here's another view, flat. As you can see I've finished it with Swarovski pearls at the back for comfort. I used gold-filled wires and an antique gold toggle.

Last week, a customer asked me to repair her pearl necklace which she bought from overseas. Here it is, in its broken state. The knot in the clasp came undone. This is a common occurence in pearl necklaces, which is why I always use the best silk threads (the thickness of the thread depends on the pearls' drilled hole size) and I always recommend knotting the pearls so if the thread breaks, you won't lose all the pearls.

As you can see, I started by knotting the first four pearls nearest to the clasp. I also used a gold bouillion (the gold tube at the top of the photo) to string through the gold-filled ring so that the thread would not fray. Since the pearls are a little flat, it was not a good idea to knot every pearl otherwise the space between each pearl would cause it to become wobbly.

The re-strung necklace! Now my customer can wear her pretty pearl necklace with confidence!

More Ear-rings

Thank you so much for your feedback on the Bohemian style ear-rings! As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm into turquoise colours right now. I will post all the ear-rings I made the last two weeks in the Ear-Rings page of this blog later in the week for sale but in the meantime, here are the photos:

This pair of turquoise ear-rings are made from two different sized Japanese cube beads, 15.0 Japanese glass seed beads and howlite dyed tear drop beads. The technique used here is the St Petersburg chain.

Quite a nice pair of dainty ear-rings using 11.0 Japanese glass seed beads and magatama (drop)beads with Swarovski pearls.

As you can see, I used the same howlite dyed beads for the centre of the next two pairs of ear-rings and the one in the previous post, but played around with different colours and came up with totally different effects. This one is predominantly lime green and yellow.

This one uses mostly corals with some bronze. As with all my bead embroidery pieces, I backed the ear-rings with camel coloured ultrasuede. All the ear hooks are 14k gold-filled.

I'll probably be making a few more pairs of ear-rings this week since my stash is getting lower. The bead embroidery ear-rings can be made in any colour, with almost any focal beads and in any shape. I'll try to use different beads when I'm done with my turquoise colours!

My daughter, Alethea, requested for a black and red one so I'll make a pair for her this week too. The bead embroidery ear-rings are available for custom order. Check back at the end of the week for more photos!

Bohemian style ear-rings

I've been in a turquoise mood lately ( no I'm not feeling blue or depressed!) so excuse me if you see predominantly turquoise jewelry in the next week or so! Last week I managed to get some really whimsical gemstone beads and am designing my next neckpiece and ear-rings. In the meantime, to keep my hands occupied, I made these ear-rings using tiny tear drop shaped beads.

I used Japanese glass seed beads in two sizes to embroider around the gemstone beads and I also used faceted coral beads and gold-filled wire to complete the ear-rings. I love these ear-rings so much I think I'll keep them for myself!

SAVANNAH completed!

Today was really hot but nevertheless a great day for beading! I completed SAVANNAH (means "from the open plain") about 5 hours ahead of time. This means I can now go to the hairdressers, grocery shopping and then start on my next project.

I really love how SAVANNAH turned out. From bracelet to necklace! The large focal bead and smaller round beads are turquoise gemstones. I added a gold-filled lobster clasp to complete the necklace. The necklace is 15 inches but can be adjusted to about 16 inches if needed. I will just add a couple of turquoise beads on gold-filled wire to do that.

My Third Beaded Embroidery Neckpiece

I went supplies shopping yesterday and bought a few howlite beads dyed to look like turquoise gemstones. After much deliberation, I decided to make a bracelet cuff. However, in the midst of beading, Lady Inspiration strongly suggested I do a neckpiece or collar instead! This piece consists of 5 separate pieces which will be put together at the very end. I've yet to name her.

Here's a tiny teardrop howlite bead I glued on my stiffener fabric.

Here's the same teardrop after I beaded around it. I used the bezelling method to capture the teardrop so there's no way it will drop off. It's securely sewn to the stiffener fabric.

I decided to use this spray painted faceted shell bead (isn't it a gorgeous colour?) as my contrast colour.

All done with the bezelling and bead embroidery.

Here I've completed the edging after glueing it to my camel coloured ultrasuede fabric.

This is the beautiful centrepiece of the necklace!

PRINCESS all done!

This past weekend I celebrated my 39th birthday (yes, AGAIN!) and Mothers' Day. The hubby and children got me an Osim uGoGo, bought me lunch and I also chose a Four Leaves chocolate mousse cake. I really like bakes from Four Leaves. When I was working at Mt Elizabeth Hospital many years ago, I remember they had their first bakery nearby.

I managed to put on the finishing touches to PRINCESS so here are the photos!

PRINCESS is meant for evening wear. She is made from freshwater pearls, Swarovski pearls and Japanese glass seed beads of various sizes. Her colours range from different whites to beige, pale yellow and pastel peach. PRINCESS measures about 15 inches so fits quite snugly on the neck.

For the back I used Swarovski pearls in different sizes, light creamrose and peach with non-tarnish gold wire.

Now that I'm all done with PRINCESS, I will begin my new bracelet cuff using Tiger eye beads. Let's see where Lady Inspiration leads me today!

PRINCESS almost completed

It's been a nice week of work and I've been working on 3 projects all at the same time! Hopefully next week will be an equally good week, if not better and I can begin some new bracelet cuffs. Here are some photos of my week's work:

Here's PRINCESS, with her main body completed. I've already glued her to the ultrasuede and started on the edging which will probably take me through the weekend with so many activities going on. Will show you the completed necklace hopefully by Tuesday.

Last post I showed you two rows of beading. Here's the sunflower all completed. I'm still waiting for the brass cuffs to arrive from the US. It's taking forever!

Meantime, I experimented with an oval shape, smaller and fashioning her into a cocktail ring for myself! I think for the rings I sell, I will leave the peyote strip undone (like in the photo) and when a customer wants to buy it, I'll finish it to a perfect fit (5 minute job)!

So, while I go back to work and run my weekend activities, do have a great one and remember to relax and rest!

Projects started...

I went inspiration shopping yesterday and bought a few simple lace collars in various colours and sizes to make into beaded embroidery neck pieces and collars. Here are a few photos I thought I'd share with you today.

A simple lace collar which I've sewn on my stiffening fabric. I will be embellishing with pearls, crystals and all sorts of beads I can find with lustre and bling! This necklace will be in white, beiges and creams.

This is a flower centre I made in anticipation of my US cuff blanks due to arrive any day now.

Starting on another flower centre, I'm making this in gold for evening wear.

After completing the second row, this is what the flower looks like. For the flower to look full and lush, I'll probably need to sew about 5-6 rows. I simply love making these flowers so may make one in blue and maybe another in pink! I'll let Lady Inspiration lead the way!

BIANCA completed!

It was a good day for me yesterday, going down to get more supplies, grocery shopping with the husband and then home to complete BIANCA. All in all I spent about 15 hours to complete her and am very happy with the result.

Here's BIANCA, all embroidered up and ready for the finish.

All done! I absolutely love the feel of BIANCA in my hands. Solid and substantial, but not too heavy. She is 7.5 inches long and about 2 inches in width, the standard for a bracelet cuff.

Here's the back of BIANCA. I glued the stiffener to the ultrasuede and sewed an overlay to secure both sides.

Materials used are freshwater pearls, Japanese glass seed beads sizes 15.0, 11.0, 8.0 and magatamas.

As with all beaded embroidered necklaces and bracelet cuffs, each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. There is no one else wearing the same piece. If you are interested in owning one (or more) of these heirloom pieces, do drop me a line. At this point in time, I will not be taking custom orders for these pieces.

Step-by-Step for BIANCA

I was planning to go shopping for supplies for my embroidery collars but decided to settle down and work on my new bracelet. I am naming her BIANCA because she is fair and white. A hint of pale peach, beige and yellow complete her colour scheme. The photography isn't great because it's raining once again and my lighting is all messed up! But I am sure you get the idea what I've been doing.

I started off by making 3 flowers, one large and two medium. Then I drew the outline of the bracelet on extra hard stiffener (the ones they use to make men's shirt collars).

I centred the large flower and just went from there, not knowing what I would be doing. I had all my beads placed in front of me and just let my fingers do the walking!

Here's half of the bracelet completed. I used Swarovski pearls, freshwater pearls, aluminium beads, and different kinds of Japanese glass seed beads (some gold plated, silver lined, opaque, transparent etc). I kept the bigger and more protruding beads on top so that it won't hinder the wearer. Now to work on the second half of the piece.

How Toys Become Real

Last year I had the privilege of taking a session with some young adults on the topic of how to be real in our lives and relationships. I discovered this wonderful book called The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real. It is a children's novel written by Margery Williams and illustrated by William Nicholson. It chronicles the story of a stuffed rabbit and his quest to become real through the love of his owner. The book was first published in 1922 and has been republished many times since.

Since I've been beading at full steam ahead the past 2 days, I've also have been listening to stories on my iphone. I thought I'd share this litte abstract with you and maybe together we can be a bit more reflective today!

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Appreciation

Thanks so much to those of you who contacted me the past two days and told me how much you love ALIZA! I really appreciate your positive feedback especially since I worked really hard on it and know that others besides myself appreciate it. Making a beaded embroidery collar is like drawing or painting a piece. I may have a general idea where I want to go, but in between it's really up to Lady Inspiration and where my hands take me. When the piece is completed, it may be totally different from what I envisioned it to be at the beginning!

Last night I started making some small beadwork pieces to make up the whole for my next embroidery collar but somehow the colours are not coming together as I would like. I think I'll have to go to my suppliers tomorrow since I've customers visiting today.

In the meantime, have a great rest of the week!

This morning I was trying SO, SO hard to complete Aliza (yes, I named her!) which means "joyful or cheerful" but was constantly interrupted by phone calls, household chores and cat throwing up a hairball. So it took longer than expected but I'm done!

Here she is, folks, introducing ALIZA!

In total I spent 55 hours of actually embroidery time. I think it took so long because I kept breaking the needles until I switched to a slightly thicker and shorter needle. Hopefully my next collar will take under 40 hours to complete!

I had a lot of fun selecting the beads and colours. I wanted something cheerful but not too loud. The necklace itself was made from Delica beads and beaded with a plastic tube inside for support since the collar part is quite substantial and heavier than normal.

This is the back of the necklace. I used my new camel ultrasuede from the US. It was soft and easy to manage. I glued the collar to the ultrasuede and sewed an overlay of beads to secure it even further and give it a nicer finish.

Here is the collar on my model. It looks much better on a person since this model is a little smaller than a human.

Now I'm off to design another embroidery collar but this time the theme and colours will be totally different. Check back often to see what I'm doing!

Progress report on Beadwork Embroidery Collar

After another hectic weekend, I managed to sit down yesterday afternoon and the whole of today to work on my beadwork embroidery collar. The ultrasuede backing I ordered from the US came on Saturday night by UPS so I'm really excited about completing the necklace, hopefully by tomorrow. Here's a photo of my embroidery after about 50 hours of work.

The brown fabric on which the collar is on is the ultrasuede I will use to back the necklace. I couldn't find a large enough piece sold in Singapore (they all come in 6x8 inches only!) so I had to order from the US which cost about S$100 for one yard!! It is akin to suede leather but much softer.

With my new project assignment, I will be making quite a few beadwork embroidery collars and cuffs the next few months. It will be interesting to see how this works out. Come back for visits to catch my projects in progress!

Beadwork Embroidery Collar

This week I'm working on a new project. In fact, I'll be working on several new projects the next few weeks so if I'm rather quiet, be assured I am actually working to bring you new items. It's been a rather busy week for various reasons but here are a few photos of my new project...

Before I started, I looked through my stash of gemstone beads and decided on sandstone, agate, seashell, turquoise and Czech glass. Then I drew out the design and glued the gemstones on my stiff backing. I then painstakingly selected the tiny glass seed beads to complement the gemstones. Sometimes the colours don't work the way I envision so I undo the whole lot and start all over again till I'm satisfied with the results.

I still had time to change my beads which I did. This photo was taken 5 hours after I started the glueing process.

Here's the project 12 hours later! Yes, it's very time consuming because I have to select the right colour and texture of glass beads to fit my design. Bead embroidery is mostly free work which means to say there's no pattern to follow, just my hands and heart doing the work.

Stayed tuned as I continue to work on this project (yet to be named). I can't wait to complete it but I think the embroidery part will take another week or so. I just ordered the ultrasuede backing for the necklace (cost me more than S$100 per yard!!) from the US so will have to wait for its arrival before I can complete the whole piece.

As you enter you will notice lots of displays and a table in the centre for workshops and classes.

Lots of mirrors in the room so almost everywhere you turn you can see yourself! At the last count there are 5 mirrors and more table mirrors!

Be a Woman of Today Seminar

Last Saturday we had our first Be a Woman of Today seminar. Since we didn't have a full quota we decided to hold the two weekend seminars in one Saturday. Participants came at 11am and were supposed to leave at 5pm but all stayed till at least 6pm and some till 8pm! It was a delightful day of fun, laughter, discovery and food!

Laughter is indeed the best medicine. The ladies laughed a lot that day. Melissa had to practice classroom management!

The ladies were paired up for thought provoking discussions. Knowledge and information doesn't bring about changes, rather it's in the application. So the ladies will have to apply what they've learned when they next shop for clothing and accessories.

Trying to figure out what styles the jewelry belongs to. Can be quite confusing but Melissa was there to provide guidance.

Melissa provided opportunity for the ladies to interact and brain storm.

A Great Week

Last week, amidst my cycling adventure on Pulau Ubin with 5 other couples and many other demands of the family, I managed to complete a few cameo pieces.

Lovely cameo of a lady in neutral colours. I used Swarovski pearls and bicones for the necklace part and gold-filled chains, wire and lobster clasp. The necklace measures 16.5 inches. (S$100)

26.5 inches necklace with a drop of 5 inches. I made a Galaxy bead using 8 triangular pieces and joining them together. A spiral rope necklace with lots of Swarovski bicones add a lovely bling. The drop is coralling with different colours, shades and sizes of Swarovski bicones. (S$120)

1.5 inches in length. Delica beads, 15.0 Japanese glass seed beads, Swarovski bicones and gold-filled wires and ear hooks make up these are dainty looking cameo ear-rings. (S$30)

2 inches in length. I used Delica beads, 15.0 Japanese glass seed beads, Swarovski pearls and bicones and gold-filled wire as well as ear hooks. (S$30)

The Be a Woman of Today seminar will be held this Saturday (10th April) from 11am to 5pm. We will be covering Colour, Accessories, Body Shape and Style. Yesterday I spent half a day with my friend Pang Li Kin. She's an Image Consultant running her own company, Potenxia Unlimited. I'm so proud of her because last month her first book was published! I started reading it on the bus, on my home, and enjoyed it very much. This afternoon, I plan to kick off my slippers and sit on my comfy couch with my camomile tea and read as much as I can!

A Wonderful Weekend

Last Friday and over the weekend, my husband and I went to a Marriage Enrichment Weekend. It was great fun getting to know the 20 or so couples, play games together, laugh and cry together and work on enriching our marriages. We had time to talk uninterrupted with our spouse without distractions like work and family.

We rushed back on Sunday afternoon and took the children out for a special dinner to celebrate our son's 18th birthday.

After a week of baking, I'm back in my studio full-time (meaning to say I'm working from 5am to 10pm with breaks in between for meals and running errands). Lots of work piling up so I must REALLY focus this week! Thank you for your continued support and orders. I really enjoy making the jewelry pieces for you.

I'm also trying my best to get my jewelry boutique ready for you to visit (sorry, only for those living in Singapore!). Please give me at least 10 more days!

Today I want to show you how different sized beads can affect the outcome of a piece of jewelry using the exact same support beads and technique.

Here are two sizes of freshwater pearls.

The necklace on the left is made using the larger freshwater pearls and the one on the right uses the smaller pearls. For both pieces I used 8.0 Japanese glass beads for the centre and 11.0 Japanese glass beads to support to the pearls. Spiral technique was used to make the design. As you can see, the larger pearls makes a more defined spiral while the smaller pearls makes a more dainty necklace.

Another baking spree!

Here's the basic triple chocolate cupcake.

Yesterday I had the privilege of baking 36 triple chocolate cupcakes and decorating them for Ethan's friend's farewell party.

Happy Lunar New Year! Here's a cupcake for Chinese New Year! The figurine is made from sugar and totally edible.

My favourite... snowman! This reminds me of my 8 years in Chicago and Dallas. I really miss the snow...

I finally made the cupcakes for Sabrina's 8th birthday! Here they are with their Princess crowns.

Change in Seminar Dates

This weekend has been quite productive for me in the designing and jewelry crafting department. I managed to complete 3 beadwork necklaces! I'll post photos in the days to come when I can get nice shots. My resident photographer is having final exams so I don't want to distract him!

After dinner with the family today, I sat down and starting playing with my beads (as usual) and came up with this flower ring. I really like it because it's simple and very attractive so plan to make a few in different colours! Yellow, pink, orange, white, red....

Thank you my dear friends for your support of my baking during Christmas and Chinese New Year. I really enjoyed baking for you! I am now back in my studio working hard for several events coming up. Here's a little teaser for you...

I absolutely love these crackled crystals gemstones in such light spring colours

I decided to make something with it.

So I got together size 11 Japanese seed beads in silver and white.

I then made a netted base for the necklace. Actually as you can see, the base can be the necklace, it's already so elegant and lacy looking!

Anyway, I started adding the crackled crystal gem chips and here's a sampling of what one part looks like. You'll have to come back to visit in a few days' time to catch the completed piece!

During the Chinese New Year holidays I managed to complete a few necklaces. Here they are:

This is a freshwater pearl necklace with magatama glass beads (which look like drops) and Japanese glass seed beads.

This necklace is made up of Swarovski pearls in three different sizes and Japanese glass seed beads.

Here's my favourite for this week! A bold necklace using a variety of gemstones, organic beads and Swarovski pearls. Rather dense and will be a stunner with that plain evening dress.

Chinese New Year

As you will already have noticed, this year started quite hectic for me with the new blog design, disappearance of my resident photographer (has tons of projects, presentations and has to study for exams!), baking for Chinese New Year and now the family will be travelling to Malaysia to visit relatives and friends. We'll be back next Wednesday.

I can assure you I'm working hard in my studio and will pack my beads in a bag to bring to Malaysia! Right now I'm working on freeform necklaces and bracelets for an event in March. I'm also working on two seminars in April to be held at my place with my friend Melissa Chor, an image consultant, so do check back regularly for more updates.

In the meantime to all my Chinese friends, have a wonderful Chinese New Year break with your family and friends!

New blog look

Thanks to Michelle of Shabby Creations, I now have a beautiful new blog design! The ivory and gold matches my jewelry room at home. I still haven't had time to decorate my room with all the Christmas and Chinese New Year baking but I'm determined to complete it once the holidays are over!

I've added a new section to my blog called "Rings and Brooches." Check back in a week or two and I'll have a few pieces up to show you.

Chinese New Year is in the air!

This week, in the midst of working on a large sized necklace, I spent a day baking pineapple tarts for my friends to sample. It was quite therapeutic for me to grate the fresh pineapples, cook them into jam, make the pastry dough and finally fashion them into little hearts.

Here's 28 pineapple tarts packed in a plastic tub complete with Chinese New Year ribbons filled with auspicious greetings

A friend asked me to make up some gift packs of 4 pineapple tarts for her clients. I used these small plastic containers so the tarts wouldn't get crushed.

The rest of this week will be spent on baking more cookies for friends and relatives as we prepare to celebrate Chinese New Year on 14th February (celebrations go on for 15 days). I will continue working on my necklace as well as prepare my jewelry room for visitors during the first week of February. Also look out for my new blog design coming soon! Still working...

It's been a good week for me in terms of work. I managed to complete more jewelry pieces than expected. Will post photos early next week. First week back at work

It's been great getting back to my beads. I've been shopping, packing and sorting out my new treasures. This week I made about 14 necklaces, some pearls and many Swarovski crystal ones. I'll post photos when my photographer has completed his work. Once I price my new jewelry pieces I'll load the photos on the appropriate pages for sale. Right now it's just for you to admire!

Here's a brooch I made on Monday with Citrine gemstones, Swarovski crystals, aluminium beads and Swarovski pearls. It's about 2 inches in diameter. I'll work on some pins as soon as I get my supplies in.

Here's a really nice Victorian style ring I made using Swarovski bicones and size 15 Japanese glass seed beads.

This centrepiece bead was made with 8 triangular pieces and sewn together to form the ball. Lots of work for this one but well worth the effort. I'm now making a necklace with 3 of these balls. Check back in a while!

Starting Work

After a few weeks off work, I'm back at my studio table organizing my beads and findings, shopping and looking through fashion magazines and websites for inspiration, ideas and tips for 2010. This week I'll be working on new items, rings and brooches!

Thank you to those who've already placed their custom orders with me. I'll be working on them as soon as I settle down. I'll also be decorating up my jewelry display room for the Chinese New Year buys. Will let you know when you can visit.

I'll be working on more necklaces/collars similar to this. They will look gorgeous on a simple evening dress. If you'd like something like this let me know.

Orders will take 6-8 weeks to be completed.

My family and I spent 4 days in Ho Chi Minh City. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and plan to go back. Lady Inspiration came back with me so I'll be sitting down to make some new designs. I will only start work on orders next week. In the meantime, here are some photos of our trip.

The first thing that greeted us was the thousands of motorcycles on the road. This is the normal mode of transportation for the people. Some motorcycles had 2 adults and 2 children on it! Weaving in and out of traffic takes a cyclist with nerves of steel!

We saw people carrying fridges, glass panels, doors and this man carrying steel bars!

In Ho Chi Minh City, the power cables are external. We saw this man laying more cables!

At the crossroads where the cables seem to be a mess.

We saw a lot of street vendors who were working really hard trying to sell their wares.

Street food stores are very common.

The locals everywhere seemed to be sitting on the sides of the streets eating their lunches and dinners, oblivious to the traffic and smog around them.

Ho Chi Minh City has some French influence so some of their older buildings are distinctly different. Here's the Central Post Office. Really quite beautiful.

The month of December...

I've been baking, baking, baking for friends. This year I made more Christmas fruitcakes, cookies and American carrot cakes than last year. My daughter commented that our kitchen looks like a bakery!

In total, I must have baked more than 100 tubs of cornflakes, coconut, rum and raisin, chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and coffee cookies. Many were packed as gifts for family and friends.

American carrot cake with lots of pineapples, currants, walnuts and carrots! I told my daughter that this is a healthy snack because of all the fruits and vegetable we can get in this moist, dense cake. The Philadelphia Cream Cheese frosting is not too sweet, just a thin layer and topped with a few Hershey's chocolate chips!

In December we decided we needed to learn how to run properly (without injury) so joined my physiotherapist, Gino Ng, in his running club where he teaches Chi running. It was my first experience in running. It was amazing! No knee or ankle pain! It was also fun running in a group from Amoy Street to the Esplanade.

Gino was a former national triathlete, 2-time Singapore National Triathlon champion (2000-2001), National Duathlon champion (2001), 9-time winner of the National Vertical Marathon (1998-2001, 2004-2005, 2007-2009) and was also placed 4th at the 2001 Asian Duathlon Championships in Hong Kong and made several podium finishes in the Asian Cup Triathlon Series events over the years while holding down a full time job as a physiotherapist. Gino has also been a source of encouragement to me in my journey of injury and recovery this year. If not for him, I would probably have just given up and given in. Thanks, Gino!

This year we're thankful that Alethea has grown up as a young lady as well as a beautiful dancer. Come January she'll be starting Year 3 at School of the Arts (aka SOTA) where her art form is ballet.

Freeform Beadwork Embroidery

I spent 4 days working on my freeform bead embroidery necklace. It was really fun working out the main shape, choosing the main gemstone cabachon and then finding Japanese glass seed beads to bring out the colours. Now I'll wait for a while for Lady inspiration to visit me! This necklace will be part of my private collection.

New designs

This week I spent quite a bit of time looking for inspiration for my next line of jewelry but as usual, I got distracted and ended up making this in Swarovski bicones! It'll go well with a simple strapless dress or blouse for evening wear. I'll try the same design using pearls.

For those who asked, I will repeat most designs but never in the exact same colours. So you can be assured no one else has the exact same necklace, bracelet or pair of ear-rings as you!

Here's the 15 inch choker style necklace made entirely of Swarovski 3mm and 4mm bicones. It's a symmetrical design with asymmetrical colours. Can be made in any choice of colours. $60

A really nice bracelet, sold the same week I completed it! I used Japanese glass twisted bugles and size 11.0 seed beads for the base and embellished the top with lots of Swarovski pearls. Can be made with freshwater pearls or other gemstones but price will vary. $60 (SOLD)

This is a repeat of RYB-09-0033 except it's in a different colour. Can be made in any choice of colours. $28.

Shopping day for the gals

I went shopping yesterday with my friend, Melissa Chor, an image consultant who runs her own business called Image Harmony. We had lots of fun trying on clothes and looking for treasures in all the unexpected places.

One treasure I found was this ethnic necklace from India. I love the shape, design and colours. However, it was not in very good condition with the some metal parts rusted, fallen off and gemstones chipping.

Here's the original. Can you see the rusted parts? Notice too that one link is completely gone!

Here's what it looks after I changed the links and gemstones.

This is the original necklace part. The metal spacer beads are not very nice and some of the gemstones disintegrated when I looked at them more closely! I also changed the gemstones to get a brighter look.

My completed refurbished necklace! Looking forward to wearing it but now I've to go shopping and find a blouse to go with it!

Cleopatra

One of my favourite necklaces got sold this week! Cleopatra (her new owner named her!) is a free-form collar. This means I have an idea what shape I want to create but I let my fingers do the walking! I used thousands of bronze coloured Japanese glass seed beads and incorporated different colours and shapes of freshwater pearls. It's asymmetrical (which is also why it's appealing to those more artistic) and will look absolutely stunning with a simple dress.

Custom Orders and Work Commitment

Getting back to work

Thank you for your patience during the past three weeks while I was getting my two bathrooms renovated. I'm now in the process of cleaning up the layers of dust off my furniture and painting some rooms. I should be back in the full swing of things by next week when I move my studio to my boutique so customers can see my works in progress and choose their gemstones and beads for their jewelry pieces straight from my boxes.

I'm planning for my Christmas collection to be shown the first week of December. Remember, if you have any special orders now's the time to let me know! Order now and I'll complete them by middle of December.

Taking Two Weeks Off

These next two weeks will be filled with noise and dust from the renovations of our two bathrooms and service balcony. This means lots of packing, taping plastic over our furniture as well as cleaning up after the contractors leave. With some custom orders to fill I will not be posting anything on the blog for the next couple of weeks. You can continue to buy jewelry pieces by sending me an email or text message. I will check my email regularly.

Here are our cats, Sniffles and Lion-O who stay close by me when I'm working. Both are pure breed Ragdolls who competed in cat shows (and won awards!) when we had more time.

Peaceful Week

This week I've been able to settle down to work a bit on experimenting with new designs. After sketching out my ideas and designs, I try to sit down for at least 6-8 hours at my studio table to try out new colour combinations and textures. Often, it takes 4-5 tries before I settle on something I like. Then it gets made into a whole piece! On occasions, I've been known to unpick the whole piece and start all over again because I'm not completely satisfied!

I've been really thankful that I can work from home, being close to my family and cats (I've two, Sniffles and Lion-O). Here's Sniffles who loves to sit in her box the whole day sleeping, cleaning herself or watching me work!

I've uploaded a few new items so do check out the ear-rings and necklaces pages to see them. I'm working hard on my Christmas items now so do keep that list of yours going and don't forget to check it twice! The postings may be slower the next few weeks because I'll be renovating part of my apartment so lots of packing, clearing and cleaning up after the contractors leave. But rest assured I'll be working very hard!

A Very Full Work Week!

Last week I spent 4 days attending two courses that taught me how to save lives in medical emergencies. It was an eye opening experience for me. This week I'll be back at my studio table working on the numerous custom orders and new items for my Christmas show. Do keep the orders coming. I simply love making jewelry pieces for each of you to match your personality, face and body shape as well as wardrobe! Please do send in photos you want to share with me and others. More new designs

On Tuesday, while hanging out the laundry I twisted my back and found it difficult to walk, sit or even lie down. In spite of the misery I was in, I managed to sit down for short periods of time to work on these new designs. I saw my physiotherapist on Thursday and with his skillful hands I was able to walk out of the clinic almost pain-free!
This week I managed to complete a few necklaces and bracelets which I will complete posting in the next few days. Do check out the necklace and bracelet pages of the blog to see them. I still have a few custom orders to complete and hope to do so this long weekend.

Face Shapes and Ear-ring styles

Many of my customers have asked me how they can select ear-rings to complement their face shapes. Here are some suggestions:
If you have a rounder face, you may want to try elongated, drop-style and narrow chandelier ear-rings which would add length and an overall slimming effect for your face.

If you have a square-shaped face, you may want to try round contours, long teardrops and long, narrow chandelier ear-rings which would soften the edges of a square face while at the same time adding visual height.

For those of you with oval shaped faces, long rounds, triangles and ovals as well as teardrops and chandeliers would work nicely.

Heart-shaped faces may want to wear horizontal lines of rounds, teardrop shaped linear forms and chandeliers that are wider at the bottom than the top. This will add width to your face and soften the effect of a pointed chin.

A New Week Ahead!

Being an early riser, I woke up at 5am today to the sound of thunder rumbling in the far distance. I don't know about you, but I simply love a cloudy, overcast and rainy day. In fact rain inspires me to work! Before the light of the day shone through I'd cleaned up the kitchen and packed a fair bit. Now I'll settle down to a day of making a Mona Lisa necklace (hope to show it off soon!), sewing sequins on some dance costumes for church and working on my talk (The Velveteen Rabbit: A Guide to Becoming Real) for next Saturday. It'll be another busy week with physiotherapy appointments, exercise, dance rehearsals, dance classes, Alethea's RAD Intermediate examination and the talk.

Meanwhile, here's two necklaces for you to look at. I embellished 6 Swarovski rivolis individually then sewed them together into a cube, leaving 2 holes in the cube to string the 49-strand stainless steel necklace through. Very unique and you'll definitely get second looks! Stainless steel necklaces are available in light green, dark green, red and gray. Cubes available in purple, garnet, light green, blue, dark green, brown, lilac and white. Let me know if you'd love to have one.

Daughter's 14th birthday!

It's hard to imagine that 14 years have passed since we welcomed our daughter Alethea-Faith into our family! She's been such a joy to know with her zest for life, her wonderful, sparkling personality and beautiful smile. When I told her we were going to bring her to a "secret" place for dinner on Sunday, she smiled her ever so patient smile and said sweetly, "Mum, you and Pa are SO predictable! Secret places can only mean Ellenborough Market Cafe, Jack's Place or Sizzlers!" I looked at her with wide eyes as if I didn't know what she was talking about. (This year alone: Mothers' Day... Ethan's birthday... my birthday... Fathers' Day... all spent at Ellenborough Market Cafe!) Guess where we went?!

I've finally managed to post photos in the ear-rings, bracelets and necklace pages of the blog so please go check them out! Below are some of my sold items in case any of you would like me to do a remake.

This is a interesting bracelet in a wave design. Very nice for young people and can be made in any colour combinations. The toggle is a beaded pearl. I'll offer this at $20 for the first 3 bracelets ordered! After that it'll be $23. Don't forget to let me know your preferred length.

This Swarovski pearl and Cubic Zirconia bracelet will be a stunner in any evening event! Again, this is a sold out item but I can make this for you in any colour combination available. In the photo I used pink and creamrose pearls. For the clasp I used a 3-strand magnetic slider. This design can also be made into a collar style necklace (shorter than choker).

Exhibition of Jewelry pieces

I've been working quietly this week, completing a few pairs of ear-rings, a necklace and a bracelet. My resident photographer (aka Ethan) has duly taken pretty pictures of the pieces. However, I'm having problems posting the photos onto the blog so you'll all have to wait a while!

In the meantime, I'm planning a jewelry exhibition maybe in November, in time for you to pick up Christmas presents for your family, friends and co-workers. (If you want to order custom made jewelry pieces, please make your list, and don't forget to check it twice before sending it to me!)

Oh and I'm sure many of you have lots of suggestions or ideas for the exhibition (like venue, dates, time, etc), so please send them along to me. If I use your suggestions or ideas, I will definitely reward you for your effort and support! So, what are you waiting for?

Genee Gala and Dance Competition 10th August 2009

This week my daughter had the privilege of dancing Pas De Boom Boom Pow, a fusion of classical ballet on pointe and hip hop. Together with 9 other dancers from The Dance Station, they had a grand time rehearsing with choreographers Ros Ong and XYZ and performing. Here are some photos of their experience.

This week I helped my daughter's dance teacher to sew sequins on the tutus of 10 girls who will be performing on Monday 10th August at the Genee Dance Competition. Their item is called Pas De Boom Boom Pow! It's a fusion of classical ballet on pointe and hip hop!

I've been kept busy with a few special orders and new designs in the pipeline. One order was from W who wanted a 6.5 inch bracelet in shades of green as well as to match her watch which is silver and gold. Below is what I made for her. I hope she likes it!

Versatile Necklace

This week my daughter got sent home again from school for having a slight fever. A visit to the doctor found a mild throat infection which warranted two days off school. My plans for work have to take a backseat while I tend to her needs. She's scheduled back to school on Friday.

I did manage to complete a simple, yet elegant necklace which can be so versatile. This silver (gold is available too) bangle-like necklace has removeable ends which means you can have several different types of pendants for one necklace to match your clothing and occasion. The necklace is 16 inches (you just slip it onto your neck, no clasps to struggle with!) and the pendant drop is 1.75 inches.

This piece is not for sale. However, if you like this design do drop me a line. You can then select your own pendant designs, colour and quantity!

Completed Bracelet!

I finally managed to sit down for a while today to complete the long overdue blue bracelet! Check out the bracelet section. I'm now starting work on a rose quartz bracelet with pinks, lilacs and perhaps a hint of peridot greens as well.

A Birthday Present!

A good friend of mine had a birthday this past weekend. I made this necklace for her but haven't given it to her yet. The pendant is surrounded by Swarovski crystals and the necklace picks up the theme together with Swarovski pearls to give visual texture. The necklace is held together by a gold-filled lobster clasp. I hope she likes it! Happy Birthday, IL!

Working very slowly...

Last week was a little hectic in our household. My daughter got sent home from school 3 times last week for having a slight fever, 37.6! This meant we had to go to her school personally to pick her up from the infirmary. To make matters worse, we had to park really far away, sign in, temperature taking, then go to the office to wait. Apparently half of her class was down with the common cold and with the H1N1 still around, the school was not taking any chances. Funny thing is, my daughter was not sick at all! No sniffles, no sneezing, no nothing!

I'm still working on the blue bracelet, completing a couple of special orders and designing something new. Will show you when the week settles down.

Something blue...

I've been busy with family this week but work instill in progress albeit a little slower than I would like. Here's a blue bracelet I'm working on. It has a sea theme with seashells, coral twigs, coral rondelles, mother of pearl nuggets and amazonite chips. As usually I add Japanese glass seed beads and sew everything with special beading thread.

Here's what I used!

This is the base I sewed using the Ndebele stitch and size 8 Japanese glass seed beads.

I completed about half of the bracelet as shown here. Looking good I think!

A New Bracelet! (Custom Order)

Have you ever gone into a bead store and felt tempted to buy those endless strings of long gemstone chips? I know I have! However, just wearing these strings around your neck is a little boring, don't you think? Well, I have a solution... make them into something unique and special! This was what happened when one of my customers bought a lovely string of carnelian chips. I made it into a bracelet!

I started with a base bracelet using size 8 Japanese glass seed beads, using the peyote technique. Then I proceeded to embellish the base with my customer's carnelian chips, freshwater pearls, Czech fire polished beads and Swarovski bicones.

If you'd like your own special and unique bracelet or chunky necklace, I can make you one in any colour you like!

Trying to get work done!

It's been a hectic two weeks in the Yam household since the school vacation started. I've been working on two bracelets (at the same time!) and I guess it took me a while to figure out it somehow takes twice as long to complete! Will try to post photos next week if all goes as planned.

Thank you for the orders that have been coming in. I'm happy to be kept creative and busy! Below are photos of some other necklaces I've made. Enjoy!

This is a 16-inch 49-strand stainless steel necklace embellished with a beautiful Swarovski rivoli cube. I used 6 rivolis, sizes 11 and 5 Japanese glass seed beads, and Swarovski bicones. First I had to capture each rivoli individually then sew them together into a cube. Stunning for evening wear.

This is a 19-inch four-sided necklace using an African technique. Definitely different looking and a choice of any colour palette to suit any occasion.

I made this 16-inch spiral rope necklace in two cool colours, green and blue with a silver flower pendant incorporated. Suitable for day and evening wear.

New Ear-rings!

I managed to complete three pairs of ear-rings yesterday afternoon! My photographer came home early from school and was able to take the photos. For the weekend, I'll be working on two bracelets and hopefully will be able to show them off early next week.

Dimensions for Ear-Rings added

Since I started this blog in February of this year, many of you have given good feedback and some suggestions for improvements. I've really enjoyed making special jewelry pieces for you and appreciate your trust and confidence in my work.

New Items!

Today I managed to sit down long enough at my laptop to upload photos of some of the work I managed to complete after my injury. A couple of new ear-rings and necklaces. This week I hope to make new ear-rings using mainly gemstones.

This is a ribbon collar I made for a friend. It's worn like a lariat and at 48 inches she can pretty much do almost anything with it! When I feel better I will attempt one that is wider, maybe 3-4 inches wide.

Thank you to those who asked after me. My calf is doing much better and I can walk well now. Another problem has surfaced and that has to do with my knees, making me unable to sit long enough to do much beading. I hope I can get back to work by next week. Lots of ideas at the tip of my fingers!

Yesterday at my jazz dance class I tore my calf muscle while doing a perfectly routine step! Now I'm resting comfortably at home. During this time I will attempt to work on a few big projects.

Happy May Day, everyone! Thank you for your Mothers' Day orders and compliments on my work. It means a lot to me when I know there are people out there loving what I do and supporting me by wearing my jewelry! This is a 16-inch bone-shaped coral necklace I made specially for a customer but I still have a few strings of these special beads. Let me know if you'd like a bracelet or necklace!

This week has been a little hectic but I enjoyed most of it. First of all, I managed to complete 3 necklaces and 10 pairs of geometric ear-rings (will post photos next week)! I also managed to deliver a few custom orders. I'm a little disappointed I haven't managed to start on my geometric belt yet but will try to get to it this morning.

My son, Ethan-Zuriel (also my resident photographer!) attended his orientation this week at Nanyang Polytechnic where he'll begin studies for his diploma in Sports and Wellness Management on Monday. I wish him all the best in his new chapter of life and will sorely miss his companionship these past 5 months!

Necklace - CUSTOM ORDER

One of my friends asked me to design a necklace for her in "warm green." Besides choosing the right green tones, I added orange beads to make it look warmer. This is a 25-inch necklace with a beadwork triangular toggle that can also be worn in front as a centrepiece. This necklace was given to it's owner yesterday and she said it was lovely. Here's my creation!

Busy painting...

This week has been filled with paints, paint brushes, tape and ladders! I decided to paint one of my living rooms (yup, I've two) and the dining room since Ethan's still home on long break. We spent 4 days priming and painting so no new items to post this week. Will try to post something next week.
